Destination Weddings in Fiji

Fiji is a fabulous choice for a destination wedding. There's a wide range of styles and prices for accomodation, ranging from traditional multi-storey hotels to beach bungalows (called "bures"). There are even overwater bungalows available at Liku Liku, Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay, and Koro Sun Resort. You'll find the Fijian people incredibly friendly and welcoming--it feels like they "adopt you" into their family the moment they meet you.

If you and your guests love the tropical sea life, there's plenty to see and explore underwater, whether you're scuba diving, or just snorkeling. Some of the most famous dive sites in the world are up north, around Vanua Levu and Taveuni (Jacques Cousteau's son, Jean-Michel Cousteau, has a resort there). But don't discount the closer-in Mamanuca islands, as the Malolo Barrier Reef is just a few minutes boat ride from many of the resorts, and the reef is shallow enough in many places for some incredibly snorkeling.

How to Get Married in Fiji

Getting legally married in Fiji is relatively straightforward if you're from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, or Europe. Fiji weddings are legally recognized worldwide. Documentation requirements are similar to what you'd expect back home, and there aren't onerous lead times like some of the other South Pacific countries. Of course, you can always have your legal ceremony back home and just have the celebration and ceremony with your friends and family in Fiji, if you prefer.

Legal Requirements, Documents, Etc.

If you choose to have your legal wedding in Fiji, here's a list of what you'll need:

• Obtain and sign a marriage license from the nearest marriage registry in Fiji prior to the ceremony. Registrar offices are in Suva, Nadi, Sigatoka, Navua, Ba, Rakiraki, Tavua, Korovou, Nausori, Levuka, Nabouwalu, Savusavu, and Taveuni.
• Original birth certificates for each of you.
• Divorce or death certificates if either of you were previously married.
• A Certificate of single status, or Certificate of no legal impediment, from your home country.
• Copies of your passports.
• Passport photos (new requirement, as of 2019).

You'll want to forward photocopies of your documents to the registry for verification purposes at least two weeks prior to the wedding. Once you arrive in Fiji, you'll both need to visit the office in person, and bring all of the original documents with you. Then, once the marriage license is issued, it's valid for 28 days, and you need to have your ceremony before that period runs out.

It's important to note that under Fijian law, only Fijian celebrants are allowed to officiate a wedding. However, if you have a celebrant from back home whom you want involved, you can make arrangements to have both that celebrant and the Fijian celebrant at the wedding--the Fijian celebrant will need to solemnize the marriage, and sign the marriage certificate.

You'll need two witnesses, both over 21 years of age. If it's just the two of you, most resorts will provide witnesses for you.

Popular Wedding Locations in Fiji

There's more to consider than just the scenery. Generally, the closer your wedding location is to Nadi, and the main island of Viti Levu (where the international airport is), the less expense and travel time each one of your guests will experience. And while it's likely that you'll want all your guests to stay at the same resort, if you've got some guests with more discerning tastes, or lesser budgets, if you choose your location carefully it can be a short drive or boat ride to some alternate resorts.

Viti Levu

This is the main island. The international airport is on this island, in Nadi (pronounced "Nandi"), and so is the country's capital, Suva. Accommodations here tend to be more moderately priced, and this is where you're going to find most of the multi-storey hotels. There's plenty to do here, including Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pool, Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, and zip lines and a waterslide at Kula Wild Adventure Park. You can visit produce markets in Nadi, Lautoka, and Suva. There are historical sites, including Momi Battery Historical Park and Tavuni Hill Fort, or you could visit 200 year old Navala Village and learn about the Fijian way of life. There's also a famous and colorful Hindu temple in Nadi called Sri Siva Subramaniya that you can explore.

The Mamanucas

The Mamanuca (pronounced "Mama Nootha") islands are a small chain that starts just off the west coast near Nadi, and curves northwest towards the Yasawa islands. The islands vary in size; some have just a single resort on them, and some have several resorts. The proximity to the Malolo Barrier Reef, with its excellent snorkeling and diving, and the short and inexpensive boat ride from Nadi, make these islands pretty popular. Here, it's possible to have your wedding guests stay at different resorts and only be a few minutes boat ride apart.

These islands are less affected by the rainy season (November through April) than the northern islands of Vanua Levu and Taveuni (where the truly epic dive sites are located).

Vanua Levu

Both Vanua Levu and Taveuni are close to the most spectacular dive sites in Fiji. Jean-Michel Cousteau (son of SCUBA pioneer Jacques Cousteau) has his resort here. The Somosomo Strait, which separates Vanua Levu and the smaller island Taveuni, has many world-class dive sites. In these northern islands, the rainy season (November through April) is more substantial than in the southern islands, so if you're thinking of Vanua Levu or Taveuni for either diving or having your wedding, you'd should probably stick to the dry season. Getting there is a little bit more expensive and time-consuming than getting to the Mamanucas--it's about an hour's flight from Nadi, at about $150 USD per person. Schedules, booking, etc. is here. We recommend that you plan to spend at least five nights at the resort, however, we do not require it. We also suggest having your wedding at least two days after the arrival, allowing you to rest and relax before the wedding. We will always try to provide the wedding date of your choice, but this cannot always be guaranteed. Registration is a required and you must go to the local registry office to obtain a wedding license. A current passport, birth certificate and proof of annulment or divorce (if previously married) are required.

We cater to special requests, such as Fijian wedding costumes, professional flower arrangements, traditional wedding cakes, and professional photographers. Koro Sun can also perform underwater weddings. A Methodist Minister or celebrant from our local village will conduct the wedding ceremony.

Taveuni

Taveuni is popular with scuba divers, due to its proximity to some of the best diving in Fiji, with famous sites like the Great White Wall, The Purple Wall, the Zoo, The Fish Factory, and the Rainbow Reef. Like Vanua Levu, the rainy season is November through April and you'd probably want to avoid those months for either a wedding or just a dive trip. Still, if your wedding date is during that season, you might consider having your wedding down in the southern islands where it's likely to be nice weather then honeymoon in the Taveuni/Vanua Levu islands and take your chances with the diving. Having a little murkiness in the water is one thing...getting drenched during your wedding is quite another!

There's a wide range of accommodations here, ranging from ultra-luxurious private resorts like Raiwasa and Qamea to very budget-friendly economical places like Dolphin Bay Divers Retreat.

The Yasawa islands

The Yasawas are a chain of islands that curve north/northeast of the northern tip of the Mamanucas. THe northern end of these islands is directly west of Vanua Levu, and roughly due north from Nadi. Some of the more exotic and private resorts are up here, such as Yasawa Island Resort and Turtle Island. If you're looking for privacy and plenty of space and wilderness around you, this could be for you. Yasawa Island Resort in particular has won many awards, with just 18 luxury bungalows and 10 private beaches.

Like Vanua Levu and Taveuni, the rainy season here is November through April, with January through March getting about 4 times the monthly rainfall compared to the summer months.

Beqa Lagoon

First thing you need to know is: you're pronouncing it wrong! It's pronounced "benga", not "becka". The next thing to be aware of is that this area is pretty easy to get to--and being one of the southern islands, the weather is a bit more reliable all year around.

You could take a quick 30 minute flight from Nadi Airport to Pacific Harbour, then take a speedboat across the lagoon (35 minutes). Or if you'd like to see a bit more of the countryside, you can drive from Nadi (it takes about 3 hours). A third option is to take a helicopter straight from Nadi Airport--it's only 35 minutes total, for about $600 USD per person.

For divers, there are over 100 dive sites in the area. It's famous for sharks, octopus, huge fans, and healthy soft corals. The lagoon comprises over 100 square miles, protected by about 20 miles of barrier reef. Oh, and if you've ever considering a fire-walking ritual, this is the place to try it.

Other islands
