Elephant Pepper Camp

Michael Cottam - Bright Yonder

Michael Cottam from Bright Yonder says:
"A great option in the Masai Mara. Fantastic meals, great camaraderie with the other dozen or so guests. The tents are really nice, with big proper beds and a bathroom area--they heat water over a fire to fill buckets to make your shower in the morning.

The game drives are incredible here during the migration: you'll see literally thousands of animals at once, and a huge variety. At one moment it's common to be able to see wildebeest, zebra, warthog, gazelle, impala, ostrich, and baboons. With giraffe and elephants in the distance. You'll see crocodiles, hippos, lions and cheetahs as well.

Elsa's Kopje

Michael Cottam - Bright Yonder

Michael Cottam from Bright Yonder says:
"This is where they filmed the classic movie "Born Free". It's a rocky hill overlooking the Meru Nation Park. Villas are perched around the hillside, with stunning views. The honeymoon villa where we stayed has its bathtub outside, cut into the hill, maybe 20 steps down from the villa (see the photos...it's incredible).

The main pool is amazing as well, and the restaurant offers a choice of dining under thatched cover or under the stars. Pretty romantic!

Game drives are pretty special--just you and your guide all day. We did a hot breakfast in the rhino sanctuary (watching the rhinos maybe 300-400 yards away); sundowner cocktails watching giraffe and elephants and gazelles at the end of the day.

House of Waine

Michael Cottam - Bright Yonder

Michael Cottam from Bright Yonder says:
"Fabulous accommodations in Karen, a suburb of Nairobi. Family-owned, and you'll likely get to know Eric and Angela while you're there. Just a handful of rooms, and beautiful grounds and pool.

They set a table for us up out in the gardens for our lunch--amazingly romantic. Dinner was spectacular as well, indoors next to the fireplace.

Incredible rooms: we had the big suite with hand-laid parquet floors, high ceilings, enormous bathroom, and a deck. See the photos--it's amazing.

Loisaba

Michael Cottam - Bright Yonder

Michael Cottam from Bright Yonder says:
"Enormous private acreage. The lodge and cottages overlook a watering hole, perched on a horseshoe-shaped plateau. Sip your cocktail or morning coffee and watch elephants, giraffe, gazelle, etc. The kudu are fearless, wandering into the gardens amongst the cottages during the day, and eating the carefully planted foliage...really pissing off the gardener!

The Star Beds are a must-do experience. They're half covered platforms next to the river, so you sleep outside in a four-poster bed under mosquito netting if it's clear, and they roll you back under the thatched cover if it rains. Samburu warriors stand guard a dozen yards away all night with their spears. They also cook you dinner over an open fire (and it was fantastic!). Rumor has it they can actually make a souffle in a tin box over that open fire.
