Greece is perhaps best known for its ancient ruins, not the least of which is the Acropolis. But it's also a terrific beach destination, with 408 beaches awarded the Blue Flag eco-label. Greece features between 1200 and 6000 islands (depending on the definition of island), 227 of which are inhabited. Some of the more popular islands are Crete, Mykonos, and Santorini. The climate is typical Mediterranean, with mild wet winters, and hot dry summers. Mountainous areas in the northwest have a more Alpine climate, with heavy snow in winter.
