Elsa's Kopje is named after Elsa the lioness, made famous by George and Joy Adamson's biographical book and film 'Born Free'. Elsa's Kopje remains one of the most elegant lodges in Africa, with one of the most spectacular settings. It is the best upmarket location to view rhino in their natural habitat in Kenya.

Overview

For many years Kenya's best kept secret, the untamed wilderness of Meru National Park is best explored from its hidden jewel - Elsa's Kopje.

History – The lodge is built overlooking the site of George Adamson's camp at the foot of the hill and the park was the playground of Elsa the lioness of "Born Free" fame.

Location – currently the only fully operational lodge in Meru National Park, Elsa's guests have virtually the entire Park to themselves. The park is arid with Doum Palms and Baobab trees, but its 13 rivers and springs also allow for thriving riverine habitats. Meru National Park is known for its diversity of habitats and species. The lodge has a special licence to walk, fish, and conduct night game drives (pre dinner). The peak of Mughwango Hill looks down over the park, affording a breathtaking 360º view of the surrounding volcanic plains.

Highly qualified guides – Several of Elsa's Kopje guides have the impressive Silver Level KPSGA qualification, while all remaining guides have their Bronze Level KPSGA qualification.

Unrivalled game drive vehicles – Elsa's Kopje has a brand new fleet of spacious open-sided Land Cruisers. All vehicles feature enhancements specifically designed for comfort and photography, such as charging sockets and camera stands.

Review:   Recommended for: Honeymoons, anniversaries, royalty

Pros: Absolutely stunning setting atop a rocky hill, overlooking Meru National Park. The pool is spectacular, set into the natural rock of the hillside. Villas are spaced far apart for privacy. Amazing outdoor bathtub perched on the side of the hill at the honeymoon suite. Our private guide Joel took just the two of us on all our day safaris--Joel has an incredibly detailed knowledge of the wildlife. Breakfast, lunch, and your "sundowner" (drinks at sundown somewhere out in the park, watching animals) are packed in your Land Rover each morning...your meals couldn't come with better views.

Cons: None.
