4x4 Polynesian Cultural Island TourExplore > French Polynesia > Bora Bora > 4x4 Polynesian Cultural Island TourOverviewThe history and culture of Bora Bora will come alive with this fascinating 4x4 tour. If you look up a definition of "tropical paradise" in the dictionary, you just might find a picture of Bora Bora...swaying palms, calm waters, brilliant blues and greens, soft sand and rugged volcanic peaks. These trusty 4x4 vehicles will transport you from sea-level up, up, up to the mountains and everything in between. As you travel the roads of Bora Bora, your local guide will explain the history, culture, flora and fauna of this island paradise. From the great Tahitian sea-faring society beginning around 1000 AD to the many legends of the island, you are in for an educational (and maybe a bit bumpy) ride. You'll hear about the American troops who were stationed here during World War II. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Bora Bora was set up as a military supply base with more than 7,000 troops stationed here for what was known as "Operation Bobcat". You'll see several of the sites associated with this "friendly take-over" including the Faanui Canon. As the tour makes its way around the island, you will come to appreciate the advantage of these special vehicles when visiting vantage points accessible only by 4x4. The view of Matira Beach from Ringo's lookout will be worth any bumps you feel along the way. A Pareu is a type of sarong or wrap-around skirt worn in many areas of Polynesia. A stop at a local family-owned Pareu workshop will demonstrate how these beautiful tie-dyed garments are made and you'll learn how to make coconut oil as well. Before the tour comes to an end, you'll venture into Faanui Valley to see small fruit plantations and sample some fresh, delicious produce and locally-made foods. - Bring sunblock, sunglasses and insect repellent. - Wear comfortable sandals, walking shoes or other flat shoes. There is uneven ground at some of the stops. - This tour operates rain or shine. If it rains, your guide will pull down the side covers on the vehicle. - Don't forget your camera. - Bottled water is provided on the tour. - This tour can accommodate up to 8 passengers. - This tour can accommodate those with walkers or collapsible wheelchairs, provided the guest can transfer in and out of the vehicle with assistance. - Pregnant women and those with bad backs are not allowed to take this tour.
