Overview
Sable Mountain Lodge began its life in 1999 as four stone cottages and a small restaurant & bar. Built entirely by the Tent With A View team, most are still with the company today. The Majority of the Sable team come from the nearby village of Kisaki, upon whose land the lodge is built.
Today, Sable has grown to eight stone cottages and five tented rooms including two honeymoon suites, two restaurants & bars and a fresh water swimming pool and a new large watering hole and hideout from where you can watch what comes down to the water to drink. There is also a beautiful two story villa, equally good for families and couples, set on top of a hill away from the main lodge with the best view in Selous.
Sable Mountain is located in the North Western corner of Selous. The boundary to the reserve passes through the upper restaurant and bar area. The closest village is Kisaki where the TAZARA train from Dar es Salaam stops twice weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays. As the name suggests, Sable Mountain is situated over several hills and this elevation means stunning views of the surrounding bush and distant mountains as well as over the reserve itself.
A Tent With A View have always strived to provide our guests with a beautiful view and Sable Mountain is no different. Our hope is that as well as enjoying your vista you also get an insight into our larger view via our work with local communities and wildlife conservation.
We recommend walking in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat of the day as well as having the best chance of spotting game. Walks are a great way to discover the smaller fauna which you could otherwise miss by car as well as allowing for the unparalleled exhilaration of walking in the wild African bush.
Animals regularly seen include elephant, lion, hunting dog, impala, reed buck, giraffe, buffalo, wildebeest, hyena, waterbuck, lots of stunning birdlife (see separate bird list).
We combine our boat safari with a full day game drive leaving the lodge early with a packed breakfast and returning to the lodge for a late lunch. Our boat is located at Lake Tagalala which is teeming with hippo and crocs and beautiful birds.
Selous Game Reserve named after the British explorer and soldier Frederick Selous, is the largest game reserve in Africa. It is the size of Switzerland. However, only the Northern sector is dedicated to photographic tourism as the rest of the reserve is only for hunting concessions to bring much needed revenue to the reserve. In the hunting section, numbers are small but prices are very high. Selous has just about everything in terms of fauna which we have listed in our mammal and birdlist.
