Amazing Grace Discovery TourExplore > Saint Kitts and Nevis > Saint Kitts > Amazing Grace Discovery TourOverviewLearn the fascinating St. Kitts connection to the song Amazing Grace. Who would have expected that the inspirational hymn, Amazing Grace, was written by a former slave trader? John Newton, after experiencing a conversion to Christianity, went on to become an Anglican minister and abolitionist and composed what has become one of the most beloved hymns of the past 2 centuries. Your driver/guide will unfold the tale of St. Kitts from its early origins, beginning with the city’s charming capital Basseterre, with its many restored colonial buildings, thriving commercial centers, and national landmarks. Our first stop will be the Amazing Grace Experience, where you'll learn the fascinating story behind the beloved hymn. A professionally presented video will tell the story of John Newton's life; as a slave trader, of the harrowing circumstances that led to his conversion to Christianity, of his ordination as an Anglican minister, the many hymns he composed, including his most famous, Amazing Grace, and his final role as an abolitionist. The beautifully done displays discuss the connection between John Newton and St. Kitts and capture his remarkable transformation throughout his life. We proceed to Middle Island, a small town on the west coast of St. Kitts for a photo stop at St. Thomas' Anglican Church, not only the first church built in St. Kitts but in the entire Eastern Caribbean. A scenic journey into the past brings us to Wingfield Estate, where ongoing restoration of its ruins, aqueduct, machinery, tall chimney, boiling pots and rum distillery of bygone times brings to life the fascinating history of the complex and highlights how rum was once produced here. Our final stop is Romney Manor, a place of much history and extraordinarily beautiful gardens. While you’re here, stop at Caribelle Batik and observe their expert artists demonstrating this unique Indonesian art form. - Entrance fees to the Amazing Grace Experience and Romney Manor are included in the price of this tour. - Minimum of 2 guests required to operate this tour. - This tour does not operate in the month of August or on weekends or holidays. - This tour is not available for those with limited mobility. - All guests must sign a waiver prior to taking the tour.
