Even before you are welcomed to the Royal Kona Resort by the gracious staff you will be embraced by a swirl of salt air, the life-breath of the islands. You will see it ruffling the fronds of the palm trees that fringe the 12 manicured acres, tossing the waves against the stark black lava rocks at the property's feet, marching columns of clouds across the uninterrupted expanse of sky. The air here presents you with the perfume of tropical flowers.

It is a reminder that you are on the Big Island of Hawai'i, a reminder to breathe, to exhale, and completely relax.

Google Reviews

About Google Reviews: recently Google has converted their review system to require reviewers to have a proper, identifiable Google+ profile. This is a good thing, as it tends to cut down on bad reviews, both from people unwilling to stand behind their comments and fake positive reviews from the businesses themselves. Old, pre-Google+ reviews are still in the system, and will appear below as written by "A Google User". More info from Google is here.

Review:   Staying here was one of the best experiences of my life. I would love to come back! The room was only so so but the hotel was in the perfect location. I highly recommend attending the Luau! You are in Hawaii. Why would you want to spend a lot of time inside your hotel room anyways?

Review:   We stayed here a few nights and it was fine basic rooms, nothing too special. We had separate reservation and tried to keep the same room but was told a family had bought out the floor to keep their family together, fine no problem. Then they moved us to the main rooms, the ones above the resort, not the one off to the side. Let me tell you this room had roaches alive and dead. They were centered around the refrigerator. Called front desk to be asked to another room but they said they were fully booked, went to look for another hotel in the area and guess what......there were rooms here for sale so I know that's a lie. There was no way we were staying the night here. Asked for a refund and got the he'll out of dodge. I think the way they handled this was terribly unprofessional. Be cautious if you stay here.

Review:   I think this is more a three and a half star place, but it depends on the room you get. It seems like it was pretty amazing during the 80s/90s and needs an bit of updating in some parts. We had one ground-floor, corner, king room that was outdated and not attractive and smelled a bit old, but had an amazing wrap around balcony. We got another room of the same type on a higher floor and in another building and it was in much better shape. We got food to go from Hugo's and wine from the ABC store and watched the hotel's luau below and sunset from that balcony. It was pretty awesome. The corner king rooms are pretty big, which is really nice, and it felt like a good value between size and view. The staff are pretty nice and there were no issues. Glad we were there for the second room.

Review:   The property sits in a great location. The property itself has potential but is dated and some finishes are run down. Our room had a bed you could feel the bed springs and thin pillows so sleeping was difficult. The power outlets were loose and coming out of the wall. The online check in system apparently doesn't connect with the hotel's system as our reservation was wrong. Thankfully we had our confirmation email so the clerk could fix the issue. The property needs more than cosmetic work. The positives are related to the housekeeping and desk service that was good and made the stay okay. The owners need to invest in the property is the main issue.

Review:   The Royal Kona is an older resort in a great location. We had a great view from our ocean side room on the top floor of the south tower. It doss get very loud in the rooms on luau nights though, so plan accordingly. We could look right down on it from where we were staying though. The staff seemed friendly. There were no ice or vending machines in our tower. Overall we enjoyed our visit, just do not expect a top of the line modern resort.
