Overview
Enjoy a relaxing day along the coast of Vietnam!
This is a perfect second day option from your port Phu My as the ride is just one hour and the tour relaxing yet very informative.
If you want avoid the long drive into bustling Ho Chi Minh City, the coast town of Vung Tau provides an intriguing place to explore Vietnamese culture. Originally a refuge for sailors avoiding storms in the 14th century, Vung Tau has turned into a thriving Vietnamese city with a population approaching 300,000. The endless beach fronts and revitalizing breezes off the coast provide the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing day in this historic fishing town.
Your first destination will be the famous Christ of Vung Tau. Asia's equivalent to the well known statue in Rio De Janeiro this 105 foot emblem stands with its arms outstreched welcoming the South China Sea. Inside the statue are 133 spiral stairs that lead you to balconies on the towering statues outstretched arms. Enjoy the panorama of Vung Tau before heading into the city!
At Niet Van Tinh Xa or the temple of the lying Buddha you will be able to experience the atmosphere in which Buddha first entered Nirvana. Guarded by the God of Goodness (Ong Thien) and the God of Evil (Ong Ac) this pagoda is considered one of the most beautiful in Vietnam and is approached by 42 steps which signify the first 42 pages of the Buddhist Sutra. Keep your eye out for the Lotus perched on the top of the tower which manifests Buddhist purity.
Following the temple you will spend some time paying tribute to the "protector of the coast" at the Whale Dedication Temple. Legend has it that when a whale washed ashore over 100 years ago its massive size prevented it from being moved until it decomposed to the bones. This then started the monument and serves as a way to pay tribute to the marine mammals who are believed to protect the shore and save drowning sailors and fishermen. The perfect example of something you need to see to believe!
Before heading back to the pier your final stop will be at Bach Dinh or "The White Villa." This building alone will demonstrate to you why past Vietnamese rulers and French governors had such a strong attraction to the town of Vung Tau. This former summer retreat of Vietnamese and French rulers provides a captivating view of the coast and an intricate design that spared no costs during construction. With thousands of shipwrecked antiques and solitude on "big mountain" this stop will be a calming finale to your half day in south Vietnam.
