Overview
An ideal introduction to this city’s splendid highlights.
Athens is renowned as one of the greatest cities of the ancient world and the birthplace of western civilization. For first-time visitors, this excursion is an ideal introduction to this city’s splendid highlights.
Your tour begins at the natural fortress of the Acropolis, one of the most photographed and recognizable hills in the entire world. Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, you'll walk up the uneven footpath leading to the summit. Sights include the Propylaea, the Temple of Apteros Niki, the Erectheum, and the architectural triumph of the Parthenon.
Following your visit to the Acropolis you'll re-board your vehicle, passing by numerous points of interest such as Constitution Square, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Hadrian's Gate, and the Olympic Stadium, before arriving at your lunch venue. Enjoy a delicious three-course lunch, including half a bottle of wine or one beer or soft drink per person at a local area restaurant.
After lunch, you'll depart for a wonderful drive along the scenic coastal road which affords splendid views of the Saronic Gulf, passing through some of Athens' most beautiful suburbs: Glyfada, Kavori, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, Lagonissi.
Upon arrival at Cape Sounion, you'll visit the 5th century BC temple of Poseidon, standing some 200 feet above the sea at the edge of a cliff. One of the most breathtaking and deeply moving sights in all of Greece, this is where the ancient Greeks worshipped their mighty god of the seas, Poseidon. The 15 (of the original 34) columns of the Doric order that are still standing belong to the temple built here during the Golden Age of Perikles' Athens, over the relics of an older one. The architect is unknown, but it's believed to be the same person who built the Theseion in Athens.
