Overview
Matemwe is one of the most peaceful and scenic locations where nature is still unspoiled. You can enjoy snorkeling or diving at the unique and colorful Mnemba reef. For the lucky ones, whales, dolphins or sea turtles might be spotted. Kayaks and bicycles are available as well.
Matemwe Bungalows is lovely small lodge with a relaxed atmosphere, airy rooms and great views out to Mnemba Island. A great place to relax and enjoy lying back on your hammock looking out onto the Indian Ocean. We love Matemwe for offering a place to escape from some of the more crowded beaches on Zanzibar.
Matemwe Bungalows is located on the North East Coast of Zanzibar in the Matemwe area looking out towards Mnemba island. Matemwe Bungalows has just 12 thatched and whitewashed bungalows, extending along a grassy stretch over a private, pale sandy beach, linked by flower-covered walkways to an open restaurant. The restaurant is highly recommended, specialising in seafood and has an original and diverse menu, with views over the Indian Ocean. There is a southerly second beach where local children play and fishermen draw in and out their nets with the tides. Please note that tides are extreme all along this coastline, meaning periods of such high tide that the beach disappears.
The rooms retain a rustic atmosphere and renovations have enhanced the hand-crafted elegance, with sprung mattress beds now built onto raised plinths to ensure lazy ocean views. All rooms are self contained and include wonderful Persian baths, using solar power for electricity and hot water, and each has their own hammock on the veranda.
Activities include sailing in traditional ngalawa outriggers, snorkelling, diving and big-gamefishing, as well as reef-walks across the reef in front of the bungalows. Bicycle-hire and day trips with picnics are also possible.
