Africa House is a small luxury hotel located in the heart of the historical Stone Town of Zanzibar with a great view over the Indian Ocean.
Overview
The history of the Africa House building dates back over 150 years. Its original owner was a wealthy slave trader from Oman, who shortly before his death handed the property over to the Sultan of Zanzibar. In 1888 the first English Club of East Africa opened in this former royal residence. The original interiors of the club included a bar, restaurant, library, billiard room and guest rooms. At a later stage a terrace was built, which is the present day's Sunset Bar and a popular meeting place amongst tourist as well as locals.
The Africa House Hotel offers accommodation in a total of 15 rooms divided into 3 categories: 1 Royal Deluxe Room, 6 Twin or Double Deluxe Seaview Rooms and 8 Twin or Double Deluxe Stone Town View Rooms. Each room is equipped with all modern conveniences.
The restaurant is located on the second floor just above the Sunset Bar, ideal to let the evening end after a sundowner at the bar. Guests can either enjoy their meals on the terrace with views onto the Indian Ocean or inside the airy restaurant. Large ceiling fans and many windows ensure an ongoing breeze. A local artist was commissioned to paint a mural of an ancient map on the ceiling.
Tradewinds offers a diversified menu with special attention to seafood. All meals are seasoned with spices from the island's spice plantations and prepared individually at the time of order.
The restaurant is popular amongst regulars and suitable for special occasions in an elegant setting. The restaurant is open from 7.30am to 10pm and serves breakfast buffet or à la carte, lunch and dinner.
The bar, which is situated on the first floor of the Africa House Hotel, is a popular meeting place throughout the day and especially in the late afternoon. The colourful panorama as the sun sets over the ocean with fishermen gliding by in their sail-set dhows is a daily highlight.
Beside a choice of various soft drinks, wine and beer, the bar is well known for its wide variety of cocktails, such as Coconut Martini, Funky Monkey or Mojito. Tasty bar food like fresh calamari, chicken curry or burgers is available on the snacks menu. Traditional dance and music shows entertain guests on a regular basis.
