Overview

The resort is set on a desert island in the heart of an archipelago.

The Whale Island project started in 1996 when the owners discovered a damaged eco-system and were immediately determined to act. They worked hard to engage with the local community and convince them to work together to establish a 3 ha No-Take Zone close to the island to protect and repair the reefs which has resulted in waters filled with a rich and diverse marine life.

The resort frequently welcomes researchers, institutes or students in marine biology for research sessions, or their doctoral thesis.

Pros: Pretty impressive food, considering the size of the resort and how far it is from the mainland (about a 30 minute boat ride). Super fresh ingredients in mostly Vietnamese options, and at each meal you have an incredible selection of dishes to sample. Diving: probably the best coral reef dives I've ever done (and I've been all over the place). Insanely huge and diverse reefs, all fairly shallow, and in pretty good condition. Not a ton of fish though, but we did see frogfish, filefish, several lionfish, bannerfish, parrotfish, etc. The island has a great set of hikes you can do, from a short 20-minute to more like 2 hours. One of them puts you up on a rock promotory with 360 degree views. Absolutely make sure you do this hike!

Cons: There's a lot of garbage in the water near the resort itself. They've got people going around each day scooping it out of the water, but I think the region in general must be dumping a lot in the water and it's washing up and ending up on the bottom. The dive sites, however, are about 30-40 minutes away and it's all quite clean there.
