No Passport, No Problem. Most of the sightseeing tours you will find in Skagway make their way into the very close neighboring country of Canada but this tour is unique that you spend all of your time in Alaska. So if you do not have a passport, and you want see what Alaska and the gold rush era is all about, then you will want to discover Dyea.

On this two hour journey you will travel 9 miles west to the place that was a part of the goldrush madness in Skagway. Today, you will see what is left of the town of Dyea. Long before the goldrush, Alaskan Natives used seasonal fishing camp and traded with other tribes along the Chilkoot Trail. In 1897, this area would never be the same as news broke out that gold was discovered in the Yukon Territory. Prospectors flooded the Dyea valley and the Chilkoot Trail was used by many to head to the gold fields.

What seemed like overnight, businesses popped up in Dyea and life for the Alaskan Natives would forever change. As quickly as this city of Dyea grew, it was abandoned by the completion of the railway in Skagway, and the declining interest in the gold rush that never came to be.

Today the land in this valley has grown over with natural foliage and the National Park Service purchased much of this land in 1978. There are only a few remaining traces can be seen of the gold rush era. See how the Dyea Tidal Flats and the Taiya river has transformed the landscape over time. Take a step back in time and learn about life pre and post-gold rush era and discover the fascinating history and subtle beauty of Dyea.
