Overview
Monkey see. Monkey do. Will they make a monkey out of you?
The theme of this tour is 'There is plenty of time to monkey around!' and you will.
The Dominican Republic is known for its beaches, resorts and golfing. Its terrain is composed of rainforest, savannah and highlands, including Pico Duarte, the Caribbean’s tallest mountain. Much of the land is jungle and that is the way they want it. It preserves the ecology of the island. And jungles need animals and the first thought would be monkeys.
The theme of this tour is 'There is plenty of time to monkey around!' and you will. The monkeys are the stars of this show. They are natural actors, totally adapted to the presence of humans and they enjoy the attention. So don't be surprised if one comes and eats out of the bowl of fruit you are holding. But before you get to the monkeys, enjoy a stroll through the colorful botanical garden. Many of the medicinal plants, flowers and fruit trees native to this area are identified.
You will also visit a traditional home where you can learn more about the life and culture on the island. On the property is a traditional Dominican country house and your next step in understanding life here is to visit with the family that lives in the house. Just mingling with the locals brings a whole new understanding of this country. These moments, learning about a different lifestyle and culture, are really the backbone of travel. Getting to know how other people seemingly different from you live and think is eye-opening, as much so as watching the monkeys living their lives. We all have common needs and desires and that is reassuring.
The next step is a visit to a working plantation where you can sample some of the coffee and the chocolate beans that grow here. These products are part of the industry here. Enjoy learning about the products and how they are grown.
Now it is time for the focal point of the tour - the monkeys! Here in this huge nature sanctuary you will be able to seek out the squirrel monkeys that have inhabited the island forever. You can interact with them, hold them, and talk to them. They respond and are used to having visitors and they love the attention. You will be able to watch and interact with these adorable squirrel monkeys and see them in their natural environment, with a background of unbelievable mountain views.
