Overview

Greenwich Village was a starting point for Pete Seeger, Peter Yarrow, Bob Dylan, Tom Chapin + more!

This is a great way to meet Greenwich Village. It is a neighborhood full of secrets!

The Village was the epicenter of the city's counterculture movement during the 60s, and there are so many landmarks here that point to this emergence that you can work up an appetite just thinking about it. But walking the lovely tree-lined streets of Greenwich Village today you will see, instead, a proliferation of cafes, bars and restaurants that sit among jazz clubs, boutiques and Off-Broadway theaters. And the success of these businesses brought multitudes of brownstones, and new residents who would support these enterprises. This area is now among Manhattan's most desirable, and therefore expensive, residential neighborhoods. Washington Park is one of the draws in this neighborhood, attracting all types of folks.

That is where this adventure begins.

Anyone you talk to who lives in NYC will tell you that they usually stay within the imaginary walls of their neighborhood. They become friends with the owners of the dry cleaners, the restaurants and the shops and grocery stores. They feel comfortable and know that everything they need is available within a few blocks. The neighborhoods that you are going to walk through have a lovely, residential feeling. Your guide will share stories about some of the extraordinary histories of the area, the architectural features, and some tales that are unknown to many of the locals.

Part of your walk will take you down Commerce Street, when the village of Greenwich was transitioning from a suburb to part of the larger city, with its restored Federal-style residences and the historic Cherry Lane Theater. Just around the corner on Bedford Street you will see what once was a speakeasy where those in the know came for some 'booze'. And one of the narrowest pieces of real estate in Manhattan is on Grove Street, so fun to imagine.

As you walk down these colorful streets, your guide will take you into some of the legendary ethnic stops in Greenwich Village. You can count on a NY style hot dog, which has no comparison elsewhere. The falafel stand is on the radar, and you cannot leave New York without a slice, and the best is in the Village! Something sweet will complete this tour.
