Overview

Discover Muscat's impressive Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, forts, history and culture.

Words don't do justice to the incomparable Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Fortunately, you will see it with your own eyes on this half-day tour of Muscat's highlights.

This wonderful tour begins with a visit to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. An architectural masterpiece covering 416,000 square meters and accommodating up to 20,000 worshippers, the Mosque took 6 years to build. Its main chandelier is made of pure Swarovski crystals and the carpet adorning the large prayer hall, woven by expert craftsmen, is made out of pure Persian silk. The Mosque's exterior is constructed with quality Rajasthani Sandstone and the main halls, as well as the smaller prayer rooms, are adorned with the finest Italian Marble. The Mosque is surrounded by 5 minarets, each of which symbolizes the holy five vows taken by every devout Muslim to reinforce his faith in the almighty.

Your knowledgeable local guide will explain life in the city as you head to Mutrah to see fishermen at work before visiting the fish market. The market's beautiful, unique canopy is constructed of curved aluminum fins, mirroring the motion of the sea. Then take a walk around the traditional Souq, crowded with diverse offerings and busy customers, before heading to the coast to Old Muscat. Learn about Omani history in the Bait al Zubair museum with its display of archaeological finds as well as Oman national dress and jewelry.

In the heart of Old Muscat, see Al Alam Palace with its distinctive blue and gold flared columns before viewing the historic Jalali and Mirani forts. Dating from the 16th century, these 2 forts define the skyline of the city and still stand guard over the natural harbor.
