Overview

A top destination known for its unique mix of culture, old world charm and leisure!

Having been at the center of the Indian spice trade for many centuries, Kochi's prosperity is largely attributed to its years of influence from traders, explorers, and travelers. Formerly Cochin, Old Kochi was once home to 32 different communities, all contributing to the city's unique conglomeration of culture. Today, barely 15 remain, yet you will get to know some of the most influential - Arabs, Konkanis, Gujaratis, Jews, and others. There is truly nowhere else in India with such an intriguing mix of culture!

Situated on a scenic estuary, and spread over a series of islands crisscrossed by the sea and backwaters, Kochi's main sections are linked by a complex system of ferries and bridges. After a pick up from the cruise pier, your introduction to Kochi will begin. Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, Kochi's most historic neighborhoods, are the focus of interest. Here Kochi's past is reflected in an assortment of architectural styles - Portuguese, Dutch and British influences are all evident. You'll visit the Bazaar as well as the Kochi Raja's Palace.

In the afternoon our focus will turn to Kochi's Royal Dynasty, and we will head to the royal district of Kochi, Tripunithura. A walk along the Cochin Royal Heritage Trail will reveal the fascinating story of the royal family. Your guide will detail the ebb and flow in their fortunes under the Europeans, before their eventual merger with the Indian Union, as well as their role in developing the modern city of Kochi, encompassing their contributions in the fields of art, culture, language, education, and medicine.

You'll have the opportunity to visit the residential quarters of the royal residence where you will see some of the best examples of traditional and colonial architecture. You will then meet with the current members of the royal family. Together you will enjoy a traditional vegetarian Kerala meal (known as a Sadya). This immersive experience will surely leave a lasting impression!

You will have some time for shopping in the historic center before returning to the cruise pier.
