Overview
Explore this port city on northern Oman’s Musandam Peninsula.
As you make your way to Khasab, you'll be blown away by its dramatic scenery. Rugged cliffs rise from the sea, protected coves attract dolphins, and traditional dhow boats bob in the harbor. But that's just the beginning. Add to that preserved historical buildings, the Old Town and ancient petroglyphs and you've got the makings for a fantastic day in Khasab.
Begin with a drive through the town of Khasab with its old and new souks, bursting with color, sound, and items of every kind and description. Then visit Khasab Fort, known as Khasab Castle. Built by the Portuguese at the beginning of the 17th century, Khasab Castle boasts crenelated stone turrets, model wooden boats, and a museum with handicrafts and archaeological finds.
The next stop is Bukha Fort, located at the tip of the Arabian Peninsula that reaches out toward Iran and the straight of Hormuz. The 15-mile coastal road is a thrilling and winding ride, with the sea on one side and blasted mountain on the other. While passing through the village Al Harf, you will have a closer view of Iran. The magnificent Bukha Fort is located in a stunning location – the sea is just in front of it in a perfect crescent bay while tall mountains rise precipitously just above. Your guide will relate information about the fort, which was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese and has changed many hands many times since then.
There are actually two forts awaiting your exploration here. Although the first, Al Qala’s Fort lies in ruin, you can still climb its imposing central tower to get a great view of the fort’s crumbling walls and the bay below. Nearby, you’ll find the better preserved Bukha Fort. Restored in 1990, Bukha Fort is possibly even older than Khasab Fort.
Continuing on, you'll drive through the village of Qadah with its pretty, green farmland before arriving in the old village Tawi, home to traditional stone houses and ancient petroglyphs. These rock drawings, featuring camels, ships and warriors are estimated to be more than 2000 years old.
