OverviewThis spectacular natural wonder should not be missed! What the western portion of Kauai lacks in beaches, it more than makes up for in its spectacular natural wonder: Waimea Canyon. This great gaping gulch is quite a sight! The valley of Waimea Canyon is known for its reddish lava beds and reminds many of the Grand Canyon. A massive earthquake sent streams of lava flowing into a single river that ultimately carved this picturesque canyon. On this tour, you'll see the silver thread of the Waimea River that travels through the gorge at a trickle or a torrent, depending on the season. Weather permitting, we'll stop at three separate viewing points to take in this spectacular site. The Waimea Canyon Lookout is a wonderful vantage point for photos on Waimea Canyon Road. The colorful rock formations define the width and breadth of this huge hole in the earth. The second stop will be at the Kalalau Valley Lookout, where you can see where the canyon drops 4,000 feet to the ocean into a valley surrounded by ragged cliffs decorated with waterfalls. The third lookout is the Hanapepe Valley Lookout, which offers a choice view of the river valley hemmed in by red cliffs. Our tour continues with a visit to the Old Russian Fort, built in 1815 by a Russian fur company in hopes of seizing Kauai for the czar. We'll also see Captain Cook's Landing at the mouth of the Waimea River, where Captian James Cook first set foot in Hawaii in January, 1778. - You will have to take a short shuttle to meet your driver. - We suggest that you dress according to the weather.
