Overview

From the ferry you will view the Statue of Liberty just as millions of immigrants did.

The Statue of Liberty, one of the most recognizable sculptures in the world, stands in New York Harbor as a shining symbol of freedom and democracy. This gift of international friendship from the people of France provided the first glimpse of the United States for more than 12 million European immigrants searching for the promise of a better life. Her beacon of hope welcomed these new residents for over 60 years and, continues to inspire the millions who visit Ellis Island each year.

As your ferry gets closer to this magnificent symbol, you can imagine what excitement must have come over those seeing her for the first time. Once on the island, you will enter the Ellis Island Immigration Museum and walk the Great Hall, as millions before you have done. Search for your family's name on the American Immigrant Wall of Honor. With more than 600,000 surnames, it is the longest wall of names in the world. Perhaps you will find your name there and be inspired to delve into your genealogy.
