Private: Architectural Gems Of Helsinki Walking TourExplore > Finland > Helsinki > Private: Architectural Gems Of Helsinki Walking TourOverviewDiscover the expressive, innovative architectural styles of Helsinki. Helsinki's commitment to design is apparent around every turn, from its inviting new library to the "Chapel of Silence", a quiet respite found on the busiest corner in all of Finland. The reasons Helsinki was chosen as the World Design Capital in 2012 will be evident from the moment this tour begins. We'll visit the Kamppi Center, uniquely designed through a collaborative effort of several architects. This mixed-use complex provides shopping, residential and commercial space along with a transportation hub. Located at the Kaampi Center's entrance is the unexpected "Chapel of Silence". A stellar, yet simple example of innovative wooden architecture, the Chapel is intended to be a place where people can have a moment of silence in the middle of perhaps the busiest area in Finland. The Chapel was granted the International Architecture Award 2010 by The Chicago Athenaeum. The striking design of Kiasma, the museum of modern art by Steven Holl and the gleaming two big "glass cubes" of Sanomatalo by Antti-Matti Siikala and Jan Söderlund will reinforce Helsinki's architectural reputation. The Helsinki Music Centre, located in Kansalaistori Square, was designed by LPR Architects and Yasuhisa Toyota (acoustics) and opened in 2011. In the same square, Helsinki's Central Library, Oodi, opened in December 2018. This new library serves as the "living room" for the city's citizens and is an example of a new architectural style in Helsinki. This energy-efficient building, with its glass and steel structures and wooden facade, is a combination of traditional and contemporary flavors. A masterpiece by the great Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, Finlandia Hall is Helsinki's leading concert and convention venue.
