Overview
Chefchaouen will inspire you with it's color and culture!
Beyond Tangier we are headed into the beautiful Rif Mountain region of Morocco. Wind through the mountains until you reach Chefchaouen, the picturesque Blue City nestled in the mountain valley. Founded in 1471, ‘Chaouen’, as the locals would call it, the city has quite a mixed history of inhabitants: Berbers, Jews, Spaniards and Moors combined over time to develop the most charming and unique of Morocco’s northern cities.
Upon arrival in the Blue City, take a guided tour of the small Kasbah, walled-fort in the center of the medina. From there, explore the winding powder-blue pathways in all of their calming glory. Chefchaouen, as it turns out, is one of the best locations to practice your bargaining in the local market places - fair prices, well-made products, and eclectic and colorful presentations. Take a few minutes to sift through the textiles of the local carpet vendors, and explore the smells and textures of locally made argan oil, rose and musk cosmetic products.
Sit in the bustling plaza or small local restaurant for a simple meal of traditional dishes: sample local tagines, Moroccan salads, bean plates, olives and plenty of freshly-baked bread. If you happen to luck out and find a pastilla on the menu - don’t let the opportunity pass you by to sample one of our favorite specialties! As is tradition, end your meal with a sweet and minty Moroccan tea.
Stroll up the small river that flows through town to the local waterfall, where women historically clean their clothes, and where currently you can relax in small cafe’s along the river bed. For those of you wishing to get a small hike in, ascend the small hill facing the town to the historic Spanish Mosque. Notice the prickly pear and agave plants lining the trail. Not currently in use, the ‘mosquita’ (as locals would call it) is in beautiful ruins, but the real star of the show is the view overlooking the quaint Blue City.
Return through the mountains towards Tangier to re-board your ship, and with dreams of the peace and calm that Chefchaouen inspires.
