Overview
Fragrant spices, healing herbs and a floral feast for the eyes.
With the subtle, welcoming scent of cinnamon in the air, discover why Grenada is known as "The Spice Island" and visit a private tropical paradise, bursting with blooms.
Grenada grows more spices per square mile than anywhere else on the planet, so it's hardly surprising that spice plantations make up such a large part of the island's economy.
We'll drive through Grenada's interior on winding roads, with fantastic views of low-lying mountains and the ocean beyond and pass small villages as we make our way to the east coast of the island to our destination, a local spice and herb garden. Stepping out of the vehicle you will be greeted by intoxicating aromas of nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon and vanilla. We'll learn how these spices, as well as herbs and cocoa are grown and processed before making their way to local store shelves. Not only do these herbs and spices enhance and define our cuisine, many of them have healing properties as well, which make them popular with tourists and locals alike.
We move from the scent of spices to the fragrance of flowers. We'll visit an exquisite, 2 acre private garden, showcasing hundreds of colorful tropical flowers, including bromeliads, anthuriums, hibiscus, orchids and more than 25 species of palm trees. Wander among the well-tended paths and admire the landscaping, bringing additional beauty to the local flora. Take a close look at the lily pond and you might even find one of the resident red-footed tortoises.
