Nazareth, Tiberias And The Sea Of GalileeExplore > Israel > Haifa > Nazareth, Tiberias And The Sea Of GalileeOverviewFollow in the footsteps of Jesus, from childhood to the teachings of his adult years. Whether you consider this a Christian pilgrimage or a secular study of Christian history, you will find the sites visited to be interesting and inspirational. Starting with a pickup at the cruise ship pier, your knowledgeable guide will provide many interesting facts and stories about the life of Jesus as we visit the related historical sites. We begin our tour in Nazareth, home of Mary, the mother of Jesus and the place where Jesus spent his early years. During Jesus' childhood, Nazareth was a small town of 200 people. Today the population stands at 75,000 but there are still visible signs of Jesus' life here remaining. We'll visit the Basilica of the Annunciation located over what is believed to be the site of Mary's house, where the Angel Gabriel appeared and announced to Mary that she was to be the mother of God. Originally a Byzantine church was constructed over the spot, but in 1966 the Roman Catholic Church began construction of a new basilica over these remains and today the Basilica of the Annunciation is the largest church building in the Middle East. Located nearby is the Church of St. Joseph, which is believed to lie over the location of Jesus' earthly father's carpentry shop. Our drive to Tiberias, a lively resort town, goes by way of Kana. Christians will remember Kana as the place where Jesus performed the miracle of turning water into wine at the Wedding Feast of Kana (Cana). Tiberias is a holy place in both Jewish and Christian faiths and your guide will inform you of its significance. A visit to Capernum will show us the ruins of the ancient synagogue where Jesus taught. We continue on to Tabgha, considered to be the location where Jesus performed the miracle of transforming a small amount of fish and bread into enough food to feed multitudes of followers who had gathered to listen to him preach. On this spot, the Church of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes commemorates this event. Its interior is famous for a beautiful mosaic of loaves and fishes from the original mid-third century church. Proceeding to Yardenit, we'll visit the Jordan River, one of the world's most sacred rivers and a site of deep significance in both Jewish and Christian faiths. It is here that Jesus and John the Baptist, as well as many other followers, were baptized. This spot on the Jordan is still a popular location for baptisms. - We will always opt to avoid bad traffic and crowds.
