Overview
Viimsi Open Air Museum, Vana herbal liquor and cake, and honey beer will warm any chills in the air!
We visited the Viimsi Open Air Museum on our first visit to Tallinn and it was very informative in a lovely setting by the sea.
A theme in some of the Baltic cities is an open air museum that depicts the past life in their country. There are several in different cities that have arranged open air museums and one of the best is the Viimsi Open Air Museum just outside of Tallinn, Estonia. Your walk through this authentic and historical coastal village will give you a glimpse of everyday life for those who lived by the sea.
Walking with your guide, you will see the reconstructed fishermen dwelling houses of Krueger and Silberfeldt along with their fishing net sheds, boat hoists, and drying racks along with objects used everyday by the fishermen. All of this is accessible to your visit.
A major attraction at the museum is the historical Kingu farmyard; a farmhouse with a barn from the 1820s. The tenant was wealthy and involved in both fishing and agriculture, thus a great example of a prosperous family. There are also single family homes.
You are able to take in the highlights portraying everyday life along the windy coast in about one hour's time. After this, your guide will bring you back towards Tallin to sample some local fare. Your stop at the Scheeli Restoran, a charming local restaurant, where you will find yourself transformed to the decor of the 1920s. Personal service will deliver some famous Estonian herbal liquor called Vana Tallinn, along with cake, followed by honey beer. As the outdoor museum can be windy at times, you will find this a perfect setting to warm you up.
Before you end your stay in Tallinn, you will enjoy a full tour of the Old Town which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for many years.
