Overview

This is a trip like no other into the Antebellum South.

This unique and interesting tour will provide a different perspective on life in the Antebellum South and the operations of a current working plantation.

While plantation tours usually showcase the impressive Great House and beautiful gardens, this tour views plantation life from the perspective of the slaves. A visit to the Whitney Plantation Museum of Slavery will open your eyes to historical facts and harsh conditions endured by those who toiled and lived at the plantation.

The Whitney Plantation Historical District is on the National Register of Historic Places for many important reasons. The Big House is a beautiful example of Spanish Creole architecture and the raised slave cottages were some of the earliest built in Louisiana. Over the years, by many different owners, various outbuildings have been constructed, thus providing a time line on the evolution of a working plantation.

And speaking of working plantations, the next stop on the tour is the St. Joseph Plantation. This Creole-style property's ownership has remained in the same family since 1877, and still functions as a working sugar cane plantation to this day. Many of those family members have participated in the restoration of this property and act as tour guides as they show you around their significant, historical home.
