City Tour Of Dresden With Driver And Private GuideExplore > Germany > Dresden > City Tour Of Dresden With Driver And Private GuideOverviewDresden is the capital of the Free State of Saxony and is located in Eastern Germany. Dresden is a sublime mix of majestic castles, gorgeous churches, cultural museums, history and soothing green parks. Embrace it all! Once known as "Florence on the Elbe" for the Italian influence on the city's architecture and culture, Dresden was considered by many to be among the most beautiful cities in the world. But in February, 1945, World War II intervened and the city was virtually destroyed. Fortunately, over the years, this city has been lovingly and elegantly restored to much of its former beauty and you will have the opportunity to see it with your private driver and guide. Dresden's most famous landmark is Zwinger Palace. This Baroque beauty, built by Augustus the Strong, is the definition of opulence, with elaborate fountains, intricate sculptures and now, houses 3 museums. Not only is the palace stunning, so are the collections contained within its museums, which showcase the world's largest collection of porcelain, an impressive array of weapons and armor and the Semper Gallery, containing some of the most important works of art from the Baroque and Renaissance periods, including the Sistine Madonna by Raphael. Even if you are not an opera aficionado, you will most likely recognize the names of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss, two of opera's most famous composers. Many of their important works made their world debut at Dresden's Semperoper (Semper Opera House). Despite several reconstructions, this building has once again been restored to its former glory. The lush, green, serene Dresden Elbe Valley is a respite from the opulence of the urban area. Here you will delight in meadows, parks, botanical gardens and the Dresden Heath, a large forest in the heart of the urban area, appreciated and loved by the city's residents. How you spend your day is completely up to you! Your guide will be happy to help you decide the best itinerary based on your interests.
