OverviewA village loaded with character in the middle of Burgundy country. All along the Route des Grands Crus, there are countless ways to get to know Burgundy wines! Beaune, in the heart of Burgundy's famous vineyards, will make your toes tingle if you are a wine lover. Pommard, Corton-Charlemagne, Romanée-Conti, Meursault, Santenay and Savigny-les-Beaune are all from this area and the village itself sends a message that everyone is enjoying their leisure time with wine. The village itself is fun, loaded with as much character as the wines that surround it. “Climat” is the specific term used in Burgundy for a wine-growing plot and this area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the climats - the parcel of vines which has its own name, its history, its taste and its place in the hierarchy of wines. There are more than 1000 “climats” stretching out in a thin ribbon running from Dijon to Santenay, south of Beaune; some bear illustrious names such as Chambertin, Romanée-Conti, Clos de Vougeot, Montrachet, Corton, Musigny etc. UNESCO recognizes the unique character of the wine-producing area between Dijon and Beaune and as far as Santenay. Outstanding scenery, exceptional built heritage, unique know-how – these are the elements that supported an application that came to a conclusion on July 4th 2015. There are so many areas the produce wine around the world, but this may be the only area that has the UNESCO designation, making it rise above the rest. Enjoy your day of learning and tastings.
