Overview
Icelanders know how to show you everything from above.
Seeing Iceland from above is the only way to really know what you are seeing while on the ground. These are Land Rovers of the sky!
This excursion is in a class all by itself. Is is obvious that seeing Iceland from above was a major advantage to understanding where you have been or where you will be going. Much of the flightseeing in Iceland and elsewhere is by helicopter but for those more comfortable in a plane, you will find this a wonderful way to view it all in comfort and great visibility. Each of our planes has 7 leather seats, large windows and a quiet headset.
Your departure from the capital airport in Reykjavik is an easy one. You will head directly east flying along Mt Esja where you can see the volcanic range more so than a single peak. Learn about the glaciers and how they hide the volcanoes under their caps as you glide along, finally seeing Thingveliir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This vast park is known for its first democratic parliament established in 930 AD by the Vikings. It is also the location of the tectonic rift which is gradually tearing Iceland apart, literally inch by inch.
From the area of the park, you will head towards Geysir, which is the original hot-water spout from which all other geysers are named. We will try to hang around until the geyser begins to gush its spray of hot water into the sky. Your photos from above will be incredible.
Another of the circle stops is Gullfoss, an incredible waterfall so vast it is hard to understand the shape except from above. The waterfall is extremely powerful and you will be able to hear it even over the engines of the plane.
One extra vision on this flight is the Botnsulur mountains, where you can see one of Iceland's tallest waterfall. Called Glymur, with a cascade of 198 m, is now the second-highest waterfall in Iceland. It was long regarded as the tallest waterfall in Iceland until being surpassed by a newly measured waterfall near Morsárjökull in 2011 - Morsárfoss.
