A museum for hammers?
Fun Fact: Haines has the highest percentage of professional artists anywhere in the rural USA.
With a population of just over 2,000 and a 40-minute ferry ride away from Skagway, the best way to escape the crowds is with a trip to Haines. Perfect for anyone looking to head off-the-beaten path, Haines is a unique Alaskan town, with a little flair, that you can't find anywhere else.
After being met in Skagway, you will be escorted to the ferry for your journey through the fjord that paves the way to Haines. Your guide will give you a history of the area and the Lynn Canal, home to a variety of wildlife, including humpback whales, harbor seals, and bald eagles.
Hammers could quite possibly be man's first tool and this remote town is damn proud of them. The local curator will give you a guided tour on all things hammers, covering everything from the early Egyptian history to hammers in space. You will never look at a hammer in the same way! A 10-mile scenic drive along the Chilkat River will then take you to an artist studio called Extreme Dreams. Owners John and Sharon Svenson work in a variety of mediums including watercolor, woodcut prints, glass, and weaving. Other local artists are also featured at their shop.
It wouldn't be a trip to Haines without a stop at Chilkat State Park. You will head to your guide's favorite spots to soak in incredible views of the Chilkat Mountains. This is the perfect opportunity to see all the quirkiness and beauty that Haines has to offer.
