Overview
Visit the charming, picturesque Andalusian village of Mijas.
Of all the villages of Andalucia, one of the richest in character is the popular tourist mecca of Mijas.
Mijas, a small village nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja, may be viewed as the quintessential Andalusian village: it has steep, narrow cobblestone streets, sheer-white houses, wrought-iron grille window coverings, and numerous flowering gardens. It offers a magnificent view of the coast from its natural balcony of over 1400 feet above sea level. Many artists and writers have settled here, enjoying the benefits of an excellent climate that lasts all year round. And despite its popularity with tourists, Mijas has managed to retain much of its traditional Andalucian way of life.
Pending your desired activity level your walking tour will include a visit to the Shrine of the Virgin of the Rock, where the image of the Virgin de la peña, the patroness of Mijas, is carved into the stone. Spend some time in the Historical-Ethnological Museum, where the old trades and traditions of the village are showcased, and Max's Caravan, a museum of miniatures that opened in 1972 that boasts such displays as a ballet dancer carved out of a toothpick, and Leonardo Da Vinci's "The Last Supper" on a grain of rice. Also visit the Parish Church, and the Bullring, built in 1900 at the urging of the villagers. Your last visit will be to the Wine Museum including a tasting.
And if you don't want to walk, you can always take the Mijas "Burro Taxi," or donkey taxi!
