Enjoying a guide in an old European city is the only way to get to know it.
The best way to experience a European village is on foot and though Krakow is not a village, the old historic portion could be called that and is very pedestrian friendly.
Almost all of the city’s Old Town historic district has been turned into a pedestrian precinct with most its landmarks within easy walking distance. And every street and every square has its own life manifest itself in cafes, stores, galleries, and an assortment of cultural venues and public institutions. Krakow also has a second historic district, Kazimierz, which is just a five-minute walk away.
What can you expect to see? A stroll down Royal Road, which was the backbone of the ancient capital of Poland. It links the main city gate and the Wawel Royal Castle through Krakow's main historic streets. Krakow's Grand Square, the largest in medieval Europe, is arguably one of the world’s most beautiful plazas in Europe. A ring of gardens that surround the historic district, setting the tone for a beautiful atmosphere of outdoor living. Among the highlights are the Wawel Royal Castle, Wawel Cathedral, Cloth Hall, Town Hall Tower, the Basilica of the Virgin Mary's, Collegium Maius, and maybe the Krakow mummies, though that is a personal choice! The Jagiellonian University is included and on your way, you will pass by the Archbishop Palace, where John Paul II once lived.
In its long history Krakow underwent many ups and downs. The proud capital city of a mighty kingdom for centuries, it was turned into a sleepy borderland town of the Austrian empire in the 19th century. Then it became a vital center of Polish national awakening at the turn of the 20th century and the cradle of Poland’s rebirth, only to be reduced to backwater under communism.
