Overview
Get to know Gijón - its architecture and landscape, including a visit to a local cider cellar!
The city of Gijón is known as both a fishing town, and a summer retreat filled with charming cafes, local nightlife, and promenades. Not far from the city center sits the stunning Universidad Laboral, originally built as an orphanage for the children of miners, and now as a college. Luis Moya Blanco, the architect, built it with the vision that it would be a complex, self-sufficient city that was closed off from its surroundings. With its beautiful gardens, theater, chapel, and Plaza Central (main square), you'll see why people now refer to this location as the “City of Culture”.
Next we will visit a traditional cider cellar in the area – called a 'lagar', to see the place where the cider is produced. Learn all about the work that goes into its production, and all of the ins and outs of the cider world. Enjoy a deliciously crisp cider tasting, along with some Asturian cheese.
Return to Gijón for a brief guided tour of the old town of Gijón, and enjoy some free time before heading back to the pier.
