Overview

Dunedin's Grand Railway Station is just a tease of the beauty you'll see once you're on the tracks.

A word to the wise, when you see something marketed as a "historic" or "famous" railway, make sure you take a ride on it. These adjectives don't get attached to train routes for nothing. Following your pickup at the pier, you will head to Dunedin's Grand Railway Station for a chance to look around. Your journey ahead is almost as magnificent as the railway station you depart from. The incredible attention to detail provides a grand welcome to anyone arriving and was, at one time, the busiest station in all of New Zealand.

After enjoying a moment of railway "awe," you will hop aboard the heritage train as you travel across the iconic landscape of central Otago. The route was chosen back in 1877 from seven possibilities, with the final decision coming from the fact that it highlighted the beauty of the area while presenting the fewest engineering difficulties. Your route covers the segment that goes deep into the Taieri Gorge with the final pivot point of Middle March station. Guided commentary will point out the famous landmarks, giant viaducts, and historic bridges. Before boarding, your guide will give you a complimentary cheese board and bottle of New Zealand bubbly to snack on as you admire the views. The traditional carriages have many of the old fittings and provide access to open air balconies at each end. Choo -hoo!

Following your memorable train ride, your guide will escort you back into the vehicle and take you on a city highlights tour. The city center, New Zealand's first university, the world's steepest street, and the beautiful Signal Hill Lookout are just a handful of the additional locations you will visit!

Please note that space on this tour can be very hard to get, especially on days when multiple ships are in port. We suggest you book at least 6 months in advance for the best chance at getting space.

- Train tickets, cheese board, and NZ bubbly are included in the price of this tour. Other food and refreshments can be purchased on the train at your own expense.
