Overview

Ship Cove got its name from Captain James Cook in 1770.

Keep your eye out for dolphins and other wildlife as you journey around Resolution Bay. Some of the islands you pass are animal sanctuaries void of predators.

Captain James Cook is a bit of a New Zealand legend. When it comes to famous explorers, Mr. Cook takes the cake in New Zealand, almost in a mythical fashion. Back when men were men and exploring was exploring. Your journey will take you to Ship Cove, which was named after this famous captain on January 15, 1770.

Cruising aboard his faithful ship, The Endeavour, he anchored here to replenish supplies of food, water, and wood. From that date forward until 1777, he visited four more times at the spot that became one of his favorite anchorages. Once your boat docks, you will have the chance to walk around the creek where James made beer for his crew as they shared the beach with untouched wildlife. Take some time to wander around the Captain Cook Monument to learn a bit more about his ventures or embark on a 1 KM walk to a nearby waterfall.

Since your boat is engine powered, we won't ask you to drop any sails, like the old captain might have, but going to and from Picton will allow you to soak in the natural beauty of Queen Charlotte Sound. We won't hold it against you if you yell out a "land ho!" upon arrival.

- We suggest that you bring sunglasses or a hat and wear comfortable walking shoes.
