The Yarra River cuts right through the center of Melbourne and offers a great spot for kayaking or kicking up your feet near the Royal Botanic Gardens. Many people get caught up in living the city life to the point that they rarely leave its limits. Well, in Melbourne, if you follow this river outside of the city and into the valley, you open yourself up to beautiful views, incomparable nature, and some of Australia's best wineries.
Everyone knows Australia is famous for its unique wildlife, and the Healesville Sanctuary brings you up-close-and-personal with everything from the elusive platypus to cuddly koalas. This not-for-profit organization has education programs and an on-site recovery facility for threatened species. Take advantage of the chance to feed some kangaroos and learn about the defense mechanisms of wombats. We won't ask you to hold any of the poisonous snakes Australia is notorious for, but even seeing them behind glass will give you some chills.
If you like views, we can bring you out for some views. Taking you entirely away from the crowds on the back roads of the Yarra Valley, you will reach the Mt. Donna Buang summit, which has a recently-constructed viewing platform that provides wonderful 360 degree views. At the nearby "Rain Forest Gallery," you won't see any paintings, but rather walk along a well-kept trail among towering trees and massive ferns. Lunch at a bakery will have you eating like a local and chomping on a variety of local meat pies or fresh salads.
It wouldn't be a visit to the valley without a stop at a winery. Before returning to the pier, you'll pay a visit to the small Wild Cattle Creek Estate to sip on some wine that is perfectly accompanied by some locally-made cheese.
