Overview
The stories will flow as you tour this UNESCO site.
Spain has a long history of religions and with that, much controversy. Now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this famous pilgrimage site was once a symbol in the Spanish Christians' struggle against Islam. As the route culminates with the visit to the tomb of St James the Apostle at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, which was discovered in the 9th century. The news of the discovery spread quickly throughout Western Europe, and thus Santiago de Compostela became a pilgrimage site. The historical moment when the tomb was discovered, i.e. 9th century Muslim Spain, defined the scope and importance of the discovery in the Christian world of the time, swiftly transforming the place into a pilgrimage site on par with Jerusalem and Rome.
During your day you will enjoy a lovely hour ride through the countryside of northwest Spain to the city of Santiago de Compostela and it will become apparent very quickly that the beautiful buildings in the city do not overshadow the religious character of the past. Your walk through the historical district will include the outstanding cathedral and the main square of Santiago. Your guide will be helpful in tying together the details of the past so you can see how the monuments around the old quarter reference its history. Inside the cathedral, which was consecrated in 1211, are the remains of St. James and the building itself has elaborately carved stone facades which open onto grand plazas within the medieval walls of the old town.
A break after touring will give you the opportunity to taste some Galician specialties. Wines from this region are very refreshing and a great accompaniment to the local dishes. Your guide will make some suggestions to satisfy your taste buds. Satisfied with knowledge and food, you will head back to your starting point.
