Overview
Can't miss charming town along the coast.
If you haven't been to Italy before and you are driving into Castelsardo for the first time you may find it hard to believe that this place exists. What originally started as a defense fort was eventually settled, and provides one of the more striking sights throughout Sardinia. With a pickup at the pier and an English-speaking guide on hand, you will learn everything from its medieval start to its current functionality.
One of the greatest highlights can be found at the Doria Castle. This castle was the first establishment at this location and was built by the Doria family of Genoa. From here, the village took shape with the guidance of feudal rule. Make sure you explore the terrace among the battlements, which provides some of the best views of both the town and coast.
From here, you will navigate the town's famous lanes and alleys of its old town. The combination of its grim past are mixed with the modern advancements of any other town in the region. The unique charm can be found in small churches like the Santa Maria delle Grazie and the simple architectural challenges of building on a cliff exposed to the sea.
Make sure your camera is ready for your stop at Elephant Rock. This formation, which was shaped by the wind, looks exactly like an elephant. What seems like something simple may end up being your longest lasting memory.
