Overview
Explore one of the most infamous locations of World War II.
Near the end of the world War II, the island of Okinawa became of the most infamous sites in the Pacific as it was home to some of the bloodiest battles. Between the US forces' invasion and occupation of the island, an estimated 200,000 people, including more than 100,000 civilians and 12,5000 Americans, were killed over a three-month span. This devastation has had a strong impact on the area, and a number of monuments, as well as museums, about these events have been erected throughout Okinawa, especially in the south.
At the former Navy Underground Headquarters, you will explore several hundred meters of underground rooms and corridors that served as the Japanese navy's headquarters throughout the war. Within the complex, you will see everything from the command rooms to walls covered with shrapnel from sailors taking their lives after feeling all hope was lost at the end of the battles.
Peace Memorial Park is located on the southern tip of the island and centers around the Peace Memorial Museum. Your guide will walk you through the sobering history leading up to the battle, the battle itself, and the eventual reconstruction of Okinawa. Just a few kilometers west of the Peace Park is the Himeyuri Monument, which commemorates the lives of female high school students who worked in caves that served as field hospitals throughout the war. They were surrounded by horrendous conditions and most did not survive the war.
After a lunch break, you'll drive to Nakagusuku Village where there sits a wonderfully preserved Japanese military observation point. Take an optional visit to Nakagusuku Castle, one of the finest castles in Japan, before you finish the tour.
