Port Klang, the main gateway to Malaysia, looks much like the port of Hong Kong as the cargo containers stretch as far as you can see. The magic of Kuala Lumpur is outside of this commercial port but what you see upon your arrival here is very impressive. Once on your way to the city, you will quickly feel that this, Kuala Lumpur, is the cultural hub of the country. It is visually defined by the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, which, at 88 stories high, are the tallest twin buildings in the world and a vision of modern architecture. On the flip side, the Sri Mahamariamman is the oldest Hindu temple in Malaysia, its façade a colorful totem pole of iconography. Shopping at the Central Market is a joyful experience that involves haggling, handicrafts, and happiness. This is the summary of the city's highlights but there is so much more behind the scenes.
While your eyes are darting from one scene to the next, your guide will narrate your drive into the city and give you an orientation of the main sites as you enjoy a full panoramic tour of the city. Some of the highlights are the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, the National Monument, and the King's Palace. Your lunch stop will conclude the city tour portion and you will eat in the shadow of the Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur's 88-story twin structures are the tallest buildings in the world. The location of the restaurant is in the famous Suria Shopping Mall.
Following lunch, explore another iconic and popular attraction, the Batu Caves. The towering limestone outcropping is a short distance from the city and houses numerous Hindu shrines. It is the highlight and must-see for all in Kuala Lumpur. The Batu Caves have three main caves with the most important shrine of the Hindu God at one entrance. There is a stairway of 272 steps to reach the top where you can admire the limestone formations and where you can see devotees paying homage to their respective dieties. Most do not climb the steps but it is your option!
As Kuala Lumpur was built because of the mining of tin, your last stop will be the Selangor Pewter Visitor's Centre which will tell the story of the Chinese and their impact on the commercialization of tin. Though all arrived with an idea of what Kuala Lumpur would be like, this tour should have definitely expanded your thoughts and image of this part of Malaysia.
