Helsinki Highlights And Helsinki Zoo By BoatExplore > Finland > Helsinki > Helsinki Highlights And Helsinki Zoo By BoatOverviewThe city is stimulating, but taking a ferry to the zoo for a tour is even better. Start the day with a short highlights tour of Helsinki. Scenic Helsinki is stretched out with classic neighborhoods, as well as beautifully designed buildings. This city is a design center and the architects that have come from Finland have participated in the city's beauty. As you drive through the city, several of Helsinki's well-known sights, such as Uspenski Cathedral, the Presidential Palace, and the Swedish Theatre on Mannerheim Street, will help you formulate your idea of this northern city full of warmth. After passing the Parliament Building (one of the last large buildings in Finland to be built entirely by hand), your guide will point out the Museum of new Contemporary Art, Kiasma; it’s architectural design is credited to the American architect Steven Holl. After seeing a glimpse of the Finlandia Hall (designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto), you will pass the Olympic Stadium, site of the 1952 Olympic Games, and arrive at the famous Temppeliaukion Kirkko, the church hewn from solid rock with a ceiling faced with copper. Your “water bus ferry" is departing from the Market Square to the Helsinki Zoo. After an approximately 20-minute sea journey, you'll arrive at Korkeasaari (High Island), the location of the Helsinki Zoo. With your local guide, leisurely enjoy the zoo and its animals. Featuring snow leopards, owls, Amur tigers, wild horses, monkeys, wallabies, and musk ox, the zoo covers all of the planet’s continents except Antarctica. Enjoy a barren tundra, lush rain forests, majestic mountaintops, and mysterious wetlands. With 150 animal species and more than 1,000 plant species, the zoo displays nature’s true wonder and variety. The zoo’s main focus is conservation and protection, and they raise endangered species and protect at-risk habitats. The zoo is also filled with history. Being one of the world’s oldest zoos (1889), you can check out the old villas and stone castles, home to strolling peacocks. After your day at the zoo, ride the water bus back to the Market Square and enjoy some free time before catching the ship's shuttle bus for your return journey to your cruise ship. - Dress comfortably and wear your favorite walking shoes. - All admissions and fees described are included in the price of this tour.
