Overview

Get a little exercise yet stay away from the crowds.

On an island where residents are limited to one private 4-wheeled vehicle per family unit, biking has become an integral component of Bermudian culture. For tourists, it is also a great way to maximize sightseeing on the island. As you take a shuttle through Bermuda to its rural West End you'll feel a sense of romantic nostalgia for a simpler way of life that doesn't involve the hustle and bustle of large metropolises which comprise the modern world.

Upon reaching Ely's Harbour you will receive a 21-speed Trek Mountain Bike and a quality helmet. If you haven't ridden for awhile, don't fret - your helpful guide will provide you with a safety and riding instruction until you feel comfortable. Now the fun begins as you ride safari style led by your guide.

Your journey begins along the historic Bermuda Railway Trail. For nearly two decades the Bermuda Railway provided a non-intrusive coastal route across the archipelago. Today, it has been converted into hiking and biking trails that yield beautiful scenic views. As you bike, you will hear about the development and importance of this means of transportation moving people and goods around the island as you traverse its many paths.

The commentary will include information on the natural environment as well as historic points of interest with the guide stopping along the route to share these stories with you. The length of the ride will vary according to the speed of the group but will be somewhere between 5 and 8 miles of mostly flat trail.

The scenery along the way will include Fort Scaur as well as the sprawling Mott family estate, built in the 17th century.

Cool off with a swim after the ride if you wish as you will end at the beach. At the least enjoy a much deserved and ever refreshing cold beverage.
