Overview
This short circular route begins and ends in Faial da Terra, in the Burguete area, and takes about two hours to walk. The trail begins next to the stream Ribeira do Faial da Terra. Go up the path for about 300 metres until you come to a fork, where you should take the turning to the right. Follow the footpath alongside the stream, which leads away from the village, through woods of acacia and Victorian box. At the beginning of the footpath, on the right, you will find a recently abandoned water mill. The banks of the stream are flanked on both sides by small orchards.
After about 800 metres, you will reach a small bridge, after which the path becomes steeper, and ends in a fork, where you should turn right towards the Salto do Prego waterfall. Continue ahead and you will come to another fork where the right turn goes to Salto do Prego, and the left will take you onto the PR11 SMI Ribeira do Faial da Terra trail. After observing the waterfall, turn back and take the right turn at the second fork, towards the abandoned village of Sanguinho. In this village, which has been restored, you can find typical traditional buildings, such as small farm holdings. The name of the village comes from sanguinho, one of the endemic plants of the Azores and Madeira, which is believed to have grown in profusion in this area, and you can still see specimens of it alongside the path.
Finally take the cobbled path which winds back down the hill to the starting point, where you will find this panel. It is worth stopping frequently along this route to observe the landscape, especially Faial da Terra. Walkers are requested not to pick any fruit or vegetables along this trail.
