Overview
A mystical city becomes familiar during this tour.
It is not true that all European cities are alike but the only way to know is to delve a little deeper.
On the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea, the city of Cartagena is situated as a natural harbor as it is surrounded by five hills. It is a welcoming sight from a water entry for this reason and was the main city of the Carthaginians, also because of its protected location. Your tour will begin with a panoramic drive to a scenic view of the city. Part of your tour will be visiting the Punic Wall, built in III century BC to protect the city from the Romans. An old burial crypt was found at the site.
You would expect that the portion of the city facing the water would be reinforced, but as you travel along the port area you will see the Roman Theatre which was found and excavated a few years back. This is the most important monument in Cartagena and a total contrast to the many examples of modern architecture. Those buildings were the result of the prosperity at the beginning of the 20th century due to the mining activity around the outskirts of the city.
A walk through the pedestrian streets of the historic quarter will allow you to begin your comparison between your port of calls. It also gives you the chance to see some small local shops and even grab some tastes along the way.
