Granada has definitely become the main tourist destination in Nicaragua. Its colonial charm, the warmth of its people, the gastronomy, natural attractions and nightlife entertainment make of it the perfect destination.
But to make the most of ‘La Gran Sultana’, we introduce 7 activities that you must do if you are visiting the oldest city in Nicaragua.
- See Granada from La Merced Tower - A couple blocks away from Parque Central is La Merced church, built in 1534. It has a tower that serves as a belfry, its location and height make for one of the most beautiful sights of Granada. You can see the whole city with its old roof tiles and lake Cocibolca in the backdrop. Entrance to the tower is less than US $2.00 and a golden opportunity to take the best shots of the city.
- Make your Own Chocolate - Who doesn’t like chocolate? In Granada you will find a unique experience in ChocoMuseo, where visitors can make their own chocolate from scratch: from cocoa seeds to bar. ChocoMuseo also offers information about cocoa history, the seed that had a great value for Nicaraguan indigenous people.
- A Morning in the Market - Granada’s municipal market offers a true cultural experience. It is the ideal place to buy souvenirs and try local food. As the rest of Granada, the market building was built in 1892.
- Horse Drawn Carriage City Tour - Even though a walking tour is always a comfortable and attractive option in Granada, touring the city on a horse-drawn carriage provides for a unique experience. You can find the carriages in front of our Hotel and discover the historical places for US $20/hour or US $10/30 minutes.
- An Open Air Museum: the Cemetery - This place has the best mausoleums in the country. In its tombs rest poets, musicians, guerrilleros, politicians and even jewish guests.
- The San Francisco Convent - This is one of the oldest buildings in the city. It was founded in 1529 under the name of ‘Inmaculada Concepción by friar Toribio de Benavente from the Franciscan order. Within its walls you can find a major part of Granada’s history.
- An Extreme Adventure in Mombacho Volcano - Located only 10 km away from Granada, this volcano offers many activities for the adventurous traveler. One of the most popular is the Canopy Tour: An unforgettable experience of sliding from tree to tree through 17 platforms and bridges securely placed on the canopies.
Hotel Plaza Colón is the only boutique hotel in Granada fully owned and operated by Nicaraguans and although it has been in operation for only 9 years, its parent company MONISA (HACCP Certified), has been the region’s number one employer for almost 50 years.
An agreement with Rainforest Alliance was signed shortly after the Hotel begun operations; since then, we have worked in the implementation of Rainforest Alliance’s sustainability criteria and are Verified by this organization every year. Our sustainability policy has always been based on promoting the conservation of the environment and its resources, supporting the well being and development of the local community and providing training and promoting individual’s initiatives among our human resources.
We also focus on buying all local produce, employing local tradesmen and providing internship opportunities, implementing recycling, executing water and electricity conservation programs and supporting community projects like: Yo Puedo Leer School, Vida Joven, Casa Lupita and Operation Smile. In 2009, Hotel Plaza Colón along with Careli Tours & FundeNic (NGO), came together to carry out for the first time in Nicaragua, the program ECO ESCUELAS. The program consists of providing environmental education in public schools and it is funded by the private sector. At that time, this “pilot project”, was successfully executed for two years (2010/2011) in Pedro Joaquin Chamorro School in El Diamante, a small community along the shores of Lake Cocibolca. With the experience acquired during the pilot, the Eco Scholl Program was launched on a national level and by the end of 2013, it was already being executed in 70 public schools.
