You won't find another city with such a vibrant feeling of growth and development anywhere in the world. Considered the New York City of China, Shanghai is working to define itself as the gold standard for community, business and political development. With this comes incredible culture and an aura that rivals America's claim as the "land of opportunity." While holding onto its roots as a small fishing village and developing its name as a global flag bearer, you will have the perfect opportunity to discover this area's remarkable transition. From the eclectic architecture to the forward thinking fashion you are bound to come across an experience that you didn't even know existed!
Unlike other cities of this size many believe that Shanghai is made for walking and there isn't a better place to start than Fuxing park. Make sure you get there in the morning as that is when the park truly comes alive. Opera singers, ballroom dancers, tai chi groups, mahjong players and artists will leave you amazed at this incredible display of culture and sense of community. This park represents beauty away from the sky scrapers and provides the perfect insight to daily living in China's largest city.
A short walk over to Shanghai's French Concession introduces you to arguably the most picturesque district in Shanghai. Considered the Paris of the east this sub section of colonial Shanghai is a unique depiction of European integration from the early 1900s. Although the French were outnumbered, their unique sense of style compared to historic China still remains. In Xintiandi or "New Heaven and Earth" you will be able to visit the site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party which provides an interesting atmosphere to an event that has greatly shaped the nation.
In Old Shanghai you will see the roots that started the city back in the 11th century and becoming wrapped up in its charm is simply unavoidable. The can't miss destination in the old city is the Yu Yuan garden which represents the foremost classical garden in Shanghai. Although it can become overrun with tourists your experienced guide will pick an optimal time to visit with an understanding of the best points of access. Caged in by a swerving dragon the garden of "peace and comfort" is made up of intricate rockeries, arched bridges, goldfish ponds and pavilions dating back to the Ming Dynasty. Your moment of relaxation will continue at the Huxinting Tea House. Beautifully decorated in the traditional Chinese style on both the inside and out this famous landmark stands on stilts within a small lake and was designed specifically to deflect evil spirits. The location itself will add to the taste of your tea!
In the people's square you will visit the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition center which despite its simple name provides an interesting insight to urban planning on an enormous scale. You will spend a majority of your time on the third floor which is home to an incredible display of how urban Shanghai will look in 2020. This scaled display of the entire city uses clear plastic models to highlight the structures yet to be built which shows how residents of Shanghai have earned the title of "forward thinkers." This brief tour sets the tone for you final stop at the Shanghai World Financial Center observatory. At 1,555 feet above ground level you will look down from the largest observation deck in the world and peer over one of the most storied cities on earth.
