Half Day City Tour Of Recife With OlindaExplore > Brazil > Recife > Half Day City Tour Of Recife With OlindaOverviewExplore charming Recife and fascinating Olinda, all in just a half day! Divided by rivers and bathed by the ocean, Recife is the city of the waters. The city takes its name from the wall of reefs that form a straight line along its coast. Here the new coexists with the old, with important examples of both Portuguese and Dutch colonial architecture alongside the buildings of the modern metropolis. Depart from the the pier and drive through the streets of Old Recife with its turn-of-the-century buildings, heading downtown to Praca da Republica (Republic Square). Stop to take some photos of important venues such as the Governors Palace, the Justice Hall, St. Isabel Theatre, and a slavery days baoba. Proceed to Casa da Cultura, a former prison converted into a handcraft market, where the cells have been turned into shops that display the best artisans workmanship. Spend about 40 minutes shopping, searching for local gifts and typical mementos to bring back home with you. Next, travel towards Olinda, the old capital perched on hills only 4 miles north of Recife. Olinda has been preserved by UNESCO as a Historical and Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and the town boasts impressive scenic views and dozens of century-old churches amid colonial houses. Travel uphill to admire the landscape and feel the grandeur of this city's rich historic past, and take a short stroll to see artisans at work or purchase some of their items on display. Visit the church of Our Lady of Mercy, a magnificent sample of baroque art, and then check out the Cathedral of the Sea. The backyard has some amazing panoramic views of Olinda and adjoining Recife. Now pay a visit to the Golden Chapel. Built between 1696 and 1724, it is the expression of the baroque sacred art of Pernambuco and presents one of the most beautiful sets of Portuguese cuts in Brazil. The whole lining is covered with paintings framed with the sophisticated golden cuts and outlined with jacaranda grating. - This tour is not operating during Carnival.
