Overview
The Prague skyline is one of the most striking collections of architecture in Europe.
Prague is undeniably the Czech Republic's strongest magnet with its beautiful vistas, spired castles, and the many town squares that bring back community life from the past. It has been more than two decades since students took to the streets to bring down the 40-year-old Communist regime and from that time forward Prague has been going through a Renaissance. Though the gold-tipped spires and cobblestone streets remain, the city has an energy reflecting galleries, restaurants, music, and theatre.
The River Vltava (also known as Moldau) runs through the city from south to north, which helps to delineate areas, and each district has some highlights that carry with them stories of the past, and some of the present.
Your tour will move throughout the city and where walking lends itself the best, you will see it on foot. The Prague Castle area houses the Archbishop's Palace, St. Vitus Cathedral, and the Royal Palace, all on the Palace Square. New Town is lovely, with the National Museum and the State Opera, and the huge Wenceslas Square, the spot where more than 500,000 students and citizens gathered in the winter of 1989 to protest their government.
To understand Prague, a walk through the Jewish district is normally a part of a tour of the city. And it will be easy to see the prominence of the Jews in the Czech Republic before WWII. This area flows into the Charles Bridge and the Lesser Quarter, the favorite areas of most folks visiting. St. Nicholas Church and the Town Hall flank the pedestrian streets. And, of course, you will see the Astronomical Clock at the Old Town Hall, where you will probably join the hundreds of people who wait for the top of the hour, when the mechanical figures appear.
Upon completion of this tour, you will be familiar with the city and its history, and find it an enjoyable, as well as comfortable, place to be.
