Overview
Enjoy a cool subterranean music concert in the caves and buy pearls straight from the source!
Known as "the Island of Tranquillity," Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands. Besides the cosmopolitan city of Palma, the island offers mountains, lush valleys, fine beaches, and little fishing villages where life is simple. Writers, painters, and musicians flock to this idyllic island for the inspiration that you will also find.
The island of Palma de Mallorca has something for everyone. Those who are athletic will find a multitude of activities to choose from. If you are into beaches, you will feel right at home. On this excursion we will mix business with pleasure, ie. two different subjects but both under the surface.
We mean cultured pearls and caves with stalagmites and stalagtites. First enjoy a scenic drive of almost an hour directly across the island to Porto Cristo, a gorgeous resort area with an old-world charm that you'll just fall in love with. Not only is the resort charming, but nearby are the Drach Caves, mind-blowing underground system of caves that have been made accessible to the public. Located on Mallorca’s east coast the caves are without doubt one of the island’s most outstanding tourist attractions. This series of spectacular caverns lead to Europe's largest underground lake. The caves extend for almost 1200 meters and include internal heights of 25 meters above the cave floor. It is a sight to behold - and cool as well in the heat of the summer!
Enjoy a boat ride on the lake while listening to a concert of classical music inside the caves! The exceptional lighting system enhances the natural beauty of the caves, where stalactites and stalagmites form fascinating shapes in the water, giving the impression of mountains growing from the depths.
Before you head back to the pier, we will make another stop to show you another of Mallorca's famous products. Pearl production has been occurring on the island of Mallorca for many years and it has given the island a worldwide reputation as a purveyor of beautiful and high quality jewellery. Several Mallorcan workshops and companies produce manmade pearls today and have developed the process to the level that their best imitation pearls can only be told apart from natural ones by specialists
Local Mallorca women have specialized in the artistic fabrication of faux pearls since the 19th century and worldwide recognized for its quality and perfection. Wandering around the shop you will see every variety of pearl size, colour and setting, as there are more than twenty different colours of pearl available including shades of white, pink, grey, copper, blue and aubergine and the pearls can come strung on silk thread, knotted onto leather or set with gold, silver or platinum. How much you spend depends entirely on you, there are pieces to suit all budgets and tastes and there are other stones available as well, precious and semi precious stones set with the pearls or as statement jewellery in their own right and if you don’t fancy jewellery at all then look out for the sizable tiger statue made entirely out of small elongated pearls.
This excursion will have you leaving Mallorca with a memory of the cave system and perhaps a pearl creation to remind you of the day!
